The ancient history of the city of Hamadan dates back to 2,500 years ago, in pre-Christian times. With its 200,000 inhabitants, it is an important market center for all articles of daily use but especially for carpets. Zagheh carpets are also produced here. The warp and weft are always in cotton while the pile in sheep's wool or camel's wool, for the oldest examples, has a medium-high shaving. The colors used are red, blue and dark brown in different shades. The patterns are mostly rhombuses, lozenges, hexagons and polygons.
