Learn more about Tabriz rugs
Tabriz, the capital of the northwestern Iranian province of Azerbaijan, has enjoyed a high reputation as a center of oriental culture for centuries. The Middle Ages saw the greatest development of the arts, which also influenced carpet production in many ways. The dominant colors in Tabriz are dark red, deep blue and ivory. The typical design is a central medallion of baroque type or rosettes and palmettes arranged in a continuous modular composition. The warp and weft are made of cotton while the pile, usually wool, is medium-high shaved. The silk, occasionally used to outline the carpet patterns, has a low shave.
Sometimes after the word Tabriz we find the denomination Raj, this means the number of knots in about 7 cm. In this case the carpet is 50 Raj so it has between 500,000 and 600,000 knots per square meter.
