Learn more about Senneh rugs
The old respectable name of Senneh is almost synonymous with a fine oriental carpet. Thus also the Persian knot (in contrast to the Turkish Ghiordes knot) is commonly called the “Senneh knot”. Today this city, proclaimed capital of the Kurds by Shah Nadir in the 18th century and a place famous throughout the world for its carpets, is called Sanandaj. Senneh produced the finest knotted carpets from ancient Persia and its style has been preserved for centuries. This applies as much to the fineness of the knotting as to the development of special weaving techniques and to the design which offers a wide interpretation and elaboration of compositional models derived from other cultures, such as the Herati motif. The accuracy of the design, the precision of the knotting, the colouring and chromatic harmony, the composition of the field, corners and borders make the Senneh the most important product of Persian art. Blue, white, ivory, red and green are often used as background colours in their many shades. The warp and weft are always made of cotton while the wool pile has a low shear.
