Nain is a town located in the Esfahan region of Central Persia, 1550 meters above sea level and is characterized by a desert climate. Nain is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Persia for its beautiful mosques, such as the Jame Mosque, one of the first four built in Iran after the Arab invasion of 634 AD, the old Bazaar and the "qunat" which are underground aqueducts used to bring water from the mountains to the plains and which at their end are always characterized by a water mill. The textile tradition began only in the 1930s, but local manufacturers were able to immediately give precise connotations to production. The decoration of Nain carpets was inspired by many art forms, especially the architecture of the domes of the mosques of the Safavid dynasty (1501-1736 AD). Arabesque vines, palmettes, leaves finished in the smallest details are the distinctive signs of these rugs made with extreme accuracy. The characteristic colors of the Nain are light blue in different shades, white or ivory and a light gray, even when the field has darker shades such as blue, various shades of brown and more rarely red and green. The wool used is among the best, it is called kurk wool or the wool that is found around the neck area of the still young sheep, it is often spun together with silk to make the artifacts even finer. Thanks to their contemporary colors and their fascinating patterns they fit very well in both classic and modern furnishings.
Often linked to the name Nain, the denomination “La” follows, which in Persian means layers, or the number of threads that make up a warp, used for knotting the carpet. The fewer “layers” therefore “la” there are, the more valuable the carpet is, for example a Nain 4La will be finer than a Nain 6La or 9La. Often these carpets, being true works of art, are signed in the frame at the top by the master knotter who made them, among the most famous is the master Habibian, who became famous for the very high quality of his carpets, especially suitable for an elite of connoisseurs. In recent years, a production has also developed that has nothing to do with the Nain, the nain tabas belong to this category.
