Beluch rugs come from Khorosan, on the border with Afghanistan, and are knotted by the women of the nomadic, semi-sedentary Beluch tribes, which number about 60,000 members. The name of this tribal group, written in different ways, Baluchi, Beluchi etc., derives from the term “Baloc”, which means cockscomb, which once, as today, is the male hairstyle of these people: a tuft of hair on the head completely shaved. The typical colors of these rugs are combinations of red-blue or red-blue-brown. The designs are mainly leaves, flowers, animals, the tree of life in many variations and a large quantity of figures and geometric shapes. The warp and weft are made of goat, sheep or camel hair. The pile is mostly low, medium-high shaving is rare.
