Find out more about Qum rugs
On the edge of the great Dasht-i-Kavir salt desert, the city of Qum, located about 150 km south of Tehran, is the second holiest city in Iran, as well as an important theological center. Here lies the sanctuary of the sister of the eighth Shiite prophet. In this thousand-year-old sacred city of Qum (also called Kum or Qom) no carpets were produced until the very recent past. The production of carpets, much favored by the father of the last Shah Reza Pahlavi, dates back to 1930. Qum carpets are dominated by very light colors such as light blue, ivory and pale red. The designs, usually floral, are often a graceful riot of vines, palmettes, vases, cypresses, hunting scenes. The wool used for the pile is kurk wool, spun together with silk. In Qum, splendid examples are also made completely in silk with a knot concentration of over 10,000 dm2.
