The city of Mashad, the second holiest city in Islam after Mecca, is the great weaving center of north-eastern Persia. Today the city has 500,000 inhabitants and is considered a modern center for its universities, libraries and museums. The tradition of carpets dates back many centuries, but thanks to the contribution of Shah Nadir, who at the beginning of the 18th century elected the city as his seat of government and also his final residence, it became even more prestigious. The main colors used for Mashad carpets are red or red-blue, as decorative and contour colors all the shades of the chromatic scale are used to give an elegant and calm appearance. The typical designs are floral motifs, arabesques and tendrils. The warp and weft are in cotton, while the wool pile has a medium-high shear.
