Learn more about Kerman rugs
With its approximately 70,000 inhabitants, located at 2,000 meters above sea level, Kerman is the capital of the province of the same name that extends over a desert and steppe territory. The city itself and about half a hundred villages and oases of varying size live and have lived for centuries knotting carpets. To accommodate the taste of Western customers, the most recent examples remain on delicate pastel tones, giving preference to green, pinkish red, ivory or blue-grey. The old Kermans instead have strong and bright colors usually on shades of red or blue-red. From banded designs to the most varied all-round motifs, Kerman carpets can have many representations, from simple floral decorations to real hunting scenes. The warp and weft are in cotton, the pile instead in wool has a medium-high shaving.
Often linked to the name Kerman, the name “Laver” follows, which derives from a phonetic deformation of Ravar, a knotting center northeast of Kerman. The finest and most valuable carpets were made here.
