On a line drawn from Isfahan northwards, about halfway to Teheran, lies Kashan. Today, a city with a population of about 50,000-60,000, Kashan has profited from its position on the caravan route to India since ancient times, experiencing many cultural and economic ups and downs. Here too, history is mixed with legend. The story of the three Magi who left Kashan to go to Jerusalem is contradicted by the story of the city's foundation, attributed to the wife of Harun-al-Rashid about eight hundred years later. The two dates probably do not correspond and the foundation of Kashan may even be historically prior to the Christian era. It is certain, however, that in this location with a favourable climate, carpets of the highest artistic value and great historical-cultural value have been produced for many centuries. The colours used are mostly blue, red in various shades, beige and ivory. The designs are varied, there are floral motifs, arabesque motifs, human representations and hunting scenes. The warp and weft are in cotton while the wool pile is low or medium-low shaved.
