Learn more about Ghashghai rugs
The Ghashghai or Qashqa'i are a nomadic population belonging to various tribes who arrived from Azerbaijan and the Caucasus around the 14th century. The Ghashghai are tireless travellers and lead a nomadic life north and south of Shiraz, the capital of the province of Fars, which is located in the south-west of Iran, 900 km from Tehran and 1600 meters above sea level. Shiraz is also known as the city of 1000 gardens, the city of poets, Hafez and Saadi were born here and today it is possible to visit their tomb, literature and wine (Syrah), but above all for the inlaid mosaics and carpet weaving. The best examples of Fars are knotted by ghashghai women who have great manual skills and artistic flair, capable of creating truly unique artifacts. Thanks to their many movements and marriage alliances with other nomadic tribes, the production of carpets has undergone numerous influences in the designs, knotting techniques and materials. The main colors used to knot these carpets are red, red-brown and brown in various shades. The colors of the ornaments can also be light blue, green and yellow; in the most recent carpets also orange and lilac. The designs are then varied: we go from medallion carpets elaborated with minute floral designs to the most varied motifs of stylized animals. Warp and weft are made of wool or goat hair left in their natural color. The pile has a medium-high shaving.
