Berber carpets are hand-made by the Berber people of North Africa and the Sahara. Berber carpets are divided into various types, which differ from each other in the type of knotting, decorative motifs, colours and fabric textures. These types of carpets still bear the names of the populations, and often villages, that have developed that special technique over the years. They usually have a very long pile and a coarse knot. The designs are always geometric and very simple. This type of carpet is never symmetrical, in fact Berber carpets are often "crooked" but this characteristic makes them unique. The dimensions are all long and narrow because the looms used by nomads had to be easy to transport in their numerous journeys.
