Learn more about Bakhtiari carpets
South-east of Isfahan, in the region of Chahar-Mahal Bakhtiari, more precisely in the vicinity of its capital Sahar-Kurd, which literally translated means “city of the Kurds”, lies the territory of Zagros, mainly settled by the Bakhtiari tribe. Once nomadic but now sedentary, the Bakhtiari population is related to the Luri, of which Princess Soraya was certainly the most famous daughter. In the almost two hundred villages of the territory, the coloring used in the carpets is very heterogeneous. Many shades of white and ivory are used, different tones of red and brown and relatively little blue. Green and yellow are also used. The natural colors generally give a harmonious chromaticism, especially in the older carpets. The best-known Bakhtiari are the “garden carpets” with designs and squares filled with flowers and vines. Others are decorated with slender lozenges filled with floral ornaments, as elegant as the medallion carpets typical of Saman. The warp and weft of the Bakhtiari is always in cotton while the pile is in wool and undergoes a medium-high or high shaving.
